"WHAT IS THE FOLK-CRAFTS ?"

  Here I wolud like to tell you briefly "what is the folk-crafts?"

Folk-crafts means "People's art"(Mingei):all artisans' works made for

the general public. They are the products of the unelaborate arts of

craftsmen, and not works of art by genius. The consumers of these

products are also the general public. By folk-crafts I mean chiefly

those handicrafts of pre-industrial periods. Modern mechanical 

products are not the expression of people, but rather the work of

capitalists under commercialism, which belings to a diffrent category.

今日は柳宗悦自身の書いた英文を引用しました。

訳語で、自信なく用いていた語についてこれでよかったという語や、

これからはこちらを用いたほうがいいという語に下線を付けました。

これでよかった語　products, people,

こちらも用いたほうがいい語　artisan,craftsmen,the general public

「作」に関してwork またはworksを用いてましたが、それは美術作品等を

意味する時に用いているようで差異化が必要と思われます。handicraftsが

いいのかもしれません。productsも用いて良いようです。

巻末の英文と巻頭の日本語では、内容の複雑さに大きな違いがあります。

そういう意味で現代の人たちには、巻末の英文のほうが理解しやすいのでは

と感じます。
